På 1980-talet utökade Optyl sin överlägsenhet och märken som Cartier, Jaguar, Lacoste och Porsche gjorde stor nytta av det.
Förutom den historiska utvecklingen av design och material, fanns det fortfarande några varumärken som förblev trogna sina principer. Alltså tillverkar Zeiss, Ray-Ban och Persol fortfarande delvis glasögon eller solglasögon med mineralglaserade glas än idag, för att understryka sitt kvalitetskrav. För trots den tyngre vikten har mineralglasen ändå vissa fördelar jämfört med plastlinserna, t.ex. den ökade reptåligheten.
Cazal fick världsrykte genom extrovert design och vågade färger på 80-talet.
